I walked Laude for twenty minutes to calm down. On the way back home, I ran into Hahn’s to get some beer. Kenny was stocking sodas into the refrigerator case. He peeked down at his phone and a smile flickered across his face. He nimbly texted something back as I passed him and said hello. He grunted back. Hahn spoke to him harshly in Korean and Kenny quickly spat something back. I’m sure this wasn’t where the young man wanted to be on a Friday night. No doubt, he wanted to be with that pretty girl I saw him with a couple weeks ago.

“I’m sorry, Detective. Can I help you?” Kenny asked, trying his best to sound sincere. To me, it was unsuccessful.

Hahn nodded his approval and returned to his post behind the register. At least Hahn believed him.

“I’m good,” I answered, holding up the six-pack of Sam Adams.

Kenny patted Laude, who was tucked under my free arm. He grinned and I was reminded of the last image on the surveillance video. Who smiles like that hours after his father has been shot in the head?

I took out my wallet when I got to the register. The folded up picture of the APP tattoo fell out.

“You ever see this tattoo?” I asked Hahn as he rang up the six-pack.

He inspected it closely. “No.” As he handed me my change, he added “It’s not Alfonso’s work. Not nice enough to be his work.”

I snatched the change from Hahn. Finally calmed down about one man Lily had spent too much time with. I was now aggravated about another one.
